A Tried & Tested System With Future Potential growth!

Through trial and error, Battery Clinic perfected all their systems that enabled Battery Clinic to re-condition a battery that was equal in power, but more than half the price of a new battery. However, Battery Clinic listened to the markets they serviced and soon they added new batteries to their offering. This gave their customers a choice between a new or re-conditioned battery. Needless to say, in today’s tight financial economy, re-conditioned batteries are in great demand.

After a few years Battery Clinic demand in selling both re-conditioned and new batteries was at such a high level that it was time to move to the next level. Steve Huysamen wanted to share his success with other potential business owners in SA. Steve then approached Franchising Plus, the leading franchise consultants, to assist him in developing a successful franchise model. Battery Clinic, formally known as Steve’s Battery Clinic, was born.

Today we are proud to say that there are eleven successful operating outlets. Battery Clinic’s vision is to become the largest battery retail outlet in the South African market.

Steve's Story

Steve’s Battery Clinic started in 2006 when the founder, Steve Huysamen, was looking to start a business and could not think of any viable business that could provide a sustainable income and a long term future for him. He realised that there was a great demand in the battery business in South Africa and saw the gap in the market. Car sales were increasing dramatically and the automotive industry was doing very well.

Steve Huysamen bought into a small battery re-conditioning business that was still in the very early stages and not perfect at that time. He started his first outlet from home, in an effort to try and keep his monthly expenses as low as possible. Steve soon realised that his business was growing fast and needed to expand to bigger premises. In 2007, the company moved into their first business premises and within the next three months the demand for re-conditioned batteries increased substantially. Steve had to start looking for bigger and better machines to handle this demand. This was the beginning of Battery Clinic’s expansion.

Steve searched the globe to find the charger that was suitable for this big task on hand, and crossed paths with an electronic engineer that was up for the task to build this monster machine. This charger, with its unique secrets and expertise, re-conditioned more batteries in less time than any other in this mark.

Battery Clinic offers customers a choice between a NEW (Powerforce and Sparky Extreme) or Re-conditioned battery (ReNew). Both Powerforce and Sparky Extreme are our own “House Labels” that have been developed with large national and international battery manufacturers.

We purchased the Battery Clinic Randfontein Franchise from Steve in August 2013 because Steve decided to further the franchise and to focus on building the brand. We experienced a growth of 19% in the first year and another 15% in the following year. We achieved this by building long term relationships with the people in our community and we have always strived to offer the best service as well as the best value for money. Great relationships with Steve and other personnel at head
office as well as all other stakeholders involved has always been high on our priority list as we feel that it is one of the main ingredient for success. Q: Why did you go down the franchise route?

A: It is a common fact that the possibility to be successful is better with a proven concept. The vision and drive of
the franchisor was also a considering factor.

Q: Why did you choose your franchise?

A: Batteries are a necessity for all of us and if you run the business well and have a proper marketing plan, you have to be successful.

Q: What did you do before taking up a franchise?

A: I was a teacher of profession and a retailer of a fuel station

Q: How did you raise the finance?

A: 40% of the capital requirement was own capital, and the remainder through a bank loan.

Q: What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

A: The team received sufficient training in the operation of the business.

Q: What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

A: Our staff starts at 07:00. We fist make sure that everything is neat and clean. We then put out our banners and signage and open the shop for the customers before 08:00. After the administration duties are done and outstanding issues are followed up, the duties in the workshop start where we do the reconditioning and charging processes of batteries. Our priority, though, is to serve our customers in an efficient and professional way – we also do deliveries and installations on site.

Q: What challenges have you faced?

A: There are many market players and to penetrate the existing market and grow your business will always be a challenge.

Q: Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

A: Not really – I am used to running a retail business as a franchisor.

Q: What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?

A: Do proper homework and planning before you make a decision. The location of your business might be very important. Make sure you have a competitive advantage before you start. Consult with existing franchisees – they will provide you with important information.
